Moving Tips

Moving can certainly be stressful! Most people don't enjoy it. However, with the right moving tips, it doesn't have to be stressful. It all starts with the right packing materials, how to pack items, and a checklist to help keep you on track.

MAKE A LIST

Reserve a date with Bill's Moving & Storage.

Take pictures of your home to help remember where you place things.

Start collecting boxes, tape, and packing material for protecting packed items.

Contact services to cancel or transfer to your new address (post office, cable, utilities, employer, bank, doctor, DMV, newspaper & other subscriptions).

Will you need to store some items? We provide that service as well.

PACKING

Pack a box of items you will need immediately. Label this box "TO BE OPENED FIRST" and make sure it includes things you need, such as toiletries, tools, remote controls, etc.

Sort your clothes, cabinets & belongings to determine what needs to be packed, donated or tossed.

Pack and label boxes with your name and for which room they belong in once moved.

Pack any extremely fragile items, fine art or antiques carefully! Make sure to label them “FRAGILE” and to ensure the right boxes are packed on top of other boxes.

Use smaller boxes for packing heavy or fragile items to make the boxes easier to carry. This moving tip will also help you avoid boxes breaking due to strain.

Don't pack any open liquids to go into the moving truck. They may leak and cause damage to other boxes during shipment.

Don’t pack any flammable items, such as fuels, matches, aerosols, and propane tanks.

Remove all items from dresser drawers

Hire a professional to disconnect and service any major appliances before you move.

Defrost your freezer and refrigerator before the day you move and make sure they are empty before moving day.

Get in touch with Bill's Moving and Storage a few days before the move to confirm and review any final details.

MOVING DAY

Give your truck driver a number where you can be reached.

Make sure the most valuable items, such as jewelry, currency and documents travel with you.

Keep your personal phone book and cell phone with you in case you need to make an important call during transit.

Do a final walkthrough to make sure you have everything from cupboards, closets, & behind doors.

AFTER THE MOVE

Start unpacking & get organized.

When moving during extreme temperatures, make sure to allow time for your electronics to acclimatize before you plug them in.
